I am afraid of airplanes always have been and probably always will be. However in order to get back to Australia from Canada I have to travel by plane unless I can figure out how to walk on water. I am not brave I am terrifed of heights and I have the ability to image every worst case scenario something I inherited from my Mother.
Yet I do get on the plane in fact usually 3 of them. For a total of 40 hours I hold my breathe and tell myself everything is in Creators hands so I will be okay. I wouldn't say I have conquered my fear because I am still afraid of flying I simply know in order to get where I want to be I have to push past it.
A lot of people have told me how couragous this was but in reality I was scared and had the same doubts and fears most people have when they are creating change in their lives. The difference may be I took the step anyway. Martin Luther King said "faith is taking the next step even though you cannot see the whole staircase". Everyone can take the next step the one which starts the journey towards a life lived.
You don't have to be brave you don't have to be couragous or fearless you just have to be willing. Willing to trust, willing to take a risk and willing to recognize where you are is not where you want to be.
I use to tell my sons when they came to me with the what should I do question "if you take a step and it is not on the right direction worst case scenario you will simply end up back where you started. But if you don't take that step you will always wonder what might have been."
We will all at some stage be faced with our fears and the reality that the only way to where we want to be is to take the next step. But don't beat yourself up for being afraid or think you have to suck it up. Take a deep breathe, hold onto your faith and trust no matter what it will all be okay.
